Chapter Five

“Tonight,” Paul Ferraris said to Gisela, “I will take you out after the show and we will dance to the strains of a Strauss waltz.”

He spoke with a lilt in his voice and made it sound as if he was giving Gisela a present of very great value.

She knew that she should respond with enthusiasm, so with an almost superhuman effort she forced herself to say,

“That will be – delightful, Papa. You know how much I have been looking – forward to it.”

“You have been very good and patient, my dearest,” Paul Ferraris replied. “I know how frustrating it must have been for you to be in Vienna and not to dance and listen to the tunes that Strauss has made into almost a National Anthem for Austria.”

He laughed and went on,

“But now you will be rewarded as I have taken my place with the greatest musicians of Vienna, which is what I have worked for all my life.”

“I know, Papa, and it is what Mama would have really wanted for you.”

Paul Ferraris looked round their sitting room.

Since his success on the opening night, Herr Sacher had insisted that they move from the very small rooms they were occupying into a larger and more impressive suite.

The sitting room, furnished with mirrors, oil paintings and Royal red velvet curtains was massed with flowers from admirers.

There were small bunches of the spring blossoms picked by schoolchildren together with huge bouquets, baskets and vases from all the music groups, orchestras and choirs of Vienna and from many of its most prominent citizens.

The acknowledgement of his genius, which Paul Ferraris had missed after they left Paris, had been returned to him a thousand fold over and, despite her own personal misery, Gisela was so glad, knowing how much it really meant to her beloved father.

Now, when he was offering to take her out this evening to dance, she longed to refuse, feeling that to waltz without Miklós would make her cry.

However, when she had risen and dressed after a sleepless night, she had told herself that life had to go on, that her father needed her and she must devote herself to him.

She could understand now only too vividly what he had felt when her mother had died.

They had been so close and their love had been so perfect that Gisela was aware that it was the love that she herself wished to find with the man of her heart.

She had found it – and lost it!

Her mother had known that any sacrifice she had to make in marrying a musician was worthwhile because with Paul she possessed the most precious thing in the whole world – love.

There was no question of there ever being anybody else in the lives of either of them and that was the sort of marriage that Gisela had envisaged for herself and prayed that she might find one day.

But now she was alone and she knew that it was a loneliness that would increase as she grew older, since nobody would ever fill the place that Miklós had occupied in her heart.
